Pelindo Transforms Ambon Port to Reduce Logistics Costs in Eastern Indonesia

PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Pelindo) Regional 4 is transforming Ambon Port by standardizing and systemizing. The transformation is claimed to have helped reduce logistics costs in the Eastern Indonesia region, especially Maluku and its surroundings.
Terminal Head TPK Ambon Rouland Prakarsa Koswara said that since the transformation with standardization and systemization at Ambon Port, the loading and unloading process has become more efficient. This certainly makes operational costs cheaper and has an impact on reducing logistics costs in Ambon.

“After we standardized and systemized, now on average we can unload 26 boxes (per hour),” said Rouland during a presentation on the Port Visit Media agenda at the Pelindo Ambon Office, Friday (10/26/2023).

“The highest we have ever done, it can be up to 40 boxes per hour,” he added.

Before standardization and systemization, said Rouland, the speed of container handling at Ambon Port in one hour was only an average of 15 BSA (boxes per ship per hour). Currently, the handling speed at Ambon Port has increased significantly since standardization and systemization were carried out.

“Before the transformation, we could only unload around 15 boxes per hour from the ship, unloading or loading,” he said.

With standardization and systemization, the duration of time for ships docking at Ambon Port has become shorter. If in the past ships needed more than two days to dock, now on average it is only one or even less than a day.

“So logistics activities are faster, and costs will be cheaper because the cost of docking ships is expensive, the operational costs of equipment are also expensive. So the faster we finish, the cheaper it is,” explained Rouland.

To note, the transformation carried out at Ambon Port has begun since 2019. Starting from preparation, standardization, to systemization, and will continue to be maximized in the future.

“Ambon has gone through this entire system. So starting from the preparation, we have done standardization in 2020, then the systemization that was just implemented yesterday, August 18th,” he said.

With the transformation that has been carried out, services at Ambon Port now use the same application as other large terminals in Indonesia. This means that the system that is run will also have the same standards.

“The application is the same as Makassar, the same as Jakarta. The handling method is the same as large terminals,” he said.

Rouland added, in addition to improving in terms of service and infrastructure, Pelindo is also improving human resources (HR). One of Pelindo’s concerns is maximizing security or safety at the terminal.

“Not just systems and applications, not just tools, but we also develop people. From the basics of the terminal, from the division of work, from the skills needed for planning and control, handling special cargo, safety is also one of the concerns now. So there should be no fatalities at the terminal,” he said.
